Services
Kathy Degen's services page centres on a yogic philosophy of inner exploration, the idea that healing begins with self-awareness and the right tools to guide the journey.
From there, three core therapeutic offerings are presented. Osteopathy is rooted in restoring movement, of joints, fluids, breath, and energy, using gentle manual techniques that support the body's own innate ability to heal. Physiotherapy takes a broad functional approach, addressing pain, injury, and chronic conditions while promoting mobility, independence, and overall wellness. Clinical Pilates rounds out the offering as a movement rehabilitation program that combines physiotherapy with Pilates equipment to improve posture, strength, flexibility, and body awareness particularly for injury prevention and recurrence.
Osteopathy
“The object of the osteopath is to find health…. anyone can find disease” ~A.T. Still (Founder of Osteopathy)
Osteopathy is a form of manual therapy where the focus is restoring and enhancing movement: movement of joints, fluids, breath, energy, and emotions. The belief is that when there is a restriction or obstruction of any one of these components, there is an affect on the function of structures eventually resulting in problems with function leading to pain, illness, or disease.
The work of the osteopathic manual practitioner is to find the obstructions, remove it, and let the inherent ability of the body to heal itself do its job. Osteopathic treatments involve very soft, gentle, and safe manual techniques to help your body to heal itself. Treatment is focused on the care of the entire person, rather then just looking at a diseased body system.
Clinical Pilates
Many conditions and injuries, such as in low back pain, may recur many times. Research has shown that once there is an injury, there is an increased likelihood of another injury. This is often due to poor movement patterns, weakness, or decreased flexibility. Exercise therapy, or active movement rehabilitation is essential in preventing recurrence or prevention of further injuries.
At Thrive Therapeutics, our Movement Rehabilitation program combines functional physiotherapy with effective Pilates exercises. The program uses traditional Pilates equipment to work on improving posture, movement patterns, strength, and flexibility. This approach helps you develop awareness which is vital in healing and prevention.
Kathy Leung Degen
Registered Physiotherapist/Osteopathic Manual Practitioner
Kathy graduated from the physiotherapy program at the University of Western Ontario in 1995. She gained early clinical experience working with both the chronic pain population and dealing with industrial physiotherapy. Although she loved physiotherapy, she had personal experience with Osteopathy and found it to be incredibly interesting and effective. She began her studies with the Canadian College of Osteopathy in 2002. The program consists of 5 years of academic courses, followed by a 2 year period to complete her thesis. She graduated as a D.O.M.P. in 2009.
Since 1999, Kathy had been an avid traditional yoga student and would often incorporate yogic techniques and philosophy into her treatments. In 2002, she added Pilates to her therapeutic approach when she began learning Pilates to deal with symptoms as a consequence of her pregnancies. Through the years, Kathy has been passionate about incorporating the evidence-based practices of physiotherapy, the holistic approach of osteopathy, and the utilization of yoga and Pilates to empower patients with their own healing.
Kathy is committed to helping her clients regain an improved state of vitality and well-being. She is a firm believer that her role is to assist the client in figuring out how to remove blockages from their own healing. Her mission is always to help her clients find the root cause of their pain and/or dysfunction and work with them to develop a rational strategy to get them back to where they want to be.
